“Measure of Progress” by Apollo Campbell & David Vangel (feat. Mr. Blends), off The Moth, Flame and Phoenix.
So beat man Elaquent rolled through Toronto last week to promote his new project, Parallel. If you don’t know about eQ, kill yourselfhe’s a Guelph-based producer working in the realm of “cloud-hop”, with loopy, weird time-signatures, and knockin’ drum kicks colouring his music. Like crayon marks outside the lines of a picture book, his music waves in and out the conventional. Hope your imagination has the required capacity for this stuff, it’s left of left field. Just saying.
Listen to Elaquent’s Parallel EP here.
“14K Interlude” by Brisk in the House, with production by Satorii.
Toronto’s very own, from The Bakers Club, I had the opportunity to meet Brisk earlier this year. Dope dude, quiet from what I remember, but he’s got a real nu/old-flow that goes in and out, left and right, like a car swerving through traffic. This track, off his new tape, exemplifies his skill perfectly.
Go download Searching for Satorii already, goddamn.
“Mighty Healthy (Remix)” by Gilles.
“Poison” by Waldo (produced by Sango)
“Set to release with us soon, we introduce to you Michigan native, Waldo. Off his forthcoming EP PYOP (Pick Your Own Poison) he brings us the Poison intro.

“Someone is Late” by Mr. Blends.
Met this dude today. Pretty cool guy, and had some real important stuff to say. Justin lived in Taiwan for a few years, and showed me a picture of a flood outside his apartment from over there. Just crazy.
“White Dress” by Kanye West, off The Man With the Iron Fists OST.
Can’t wait to see RZA’s directorial debut. Also, I would love to “direct” a music video like this. It’s basically a weekend of chilling around the world with models and taking pictures. Yeah, I think I could do that for a living. DanTheMan said he had a day to throw it together. Whenever you wanna call that’d be great, Mr. West!
“Money and Food” by Jeremiah Jae, Raw Money Raps.
“GobStopper” by Jeremiah Jae (obviously produced by J DILLA) off Eating Donuts & Other Refined Foods.
Jae and Teebs are both playing with Flying Lotus tonight at Danforth Music Hall. Colour me excited, ‘cause I’m fixing for this show to be one of the best of the year.
Jae put out a criminally slept on album this year. He’s a blend of a West Coast low-key MC, and (excuse me while I go hang myself for using this term) “art rap,” but it works amazingly. Never heard of him ‘til he hopped on FlyLo’s Brainfeeder label earlier this year, but his older tapes are floating around on the internet, and they’re great. I eat up subliminal, symbolism wink-winks, poorly-mixed tapes like this. Don’t ask why. It’s a habit I don’t plan on breaking anytime soon, especially when gems like these come off. “Gobstopper” is, of course, one of my all-time favourite Dilla tracks, and Jae actually makes it. Look, I’m all for respecting the legacy of the legendary artists of yore (RIP!), but this ain’t the Vatican, and y’all ain’t the Pope, so don’t send me any hate mail for posting a track rip on Jay Dee. Take off your damn backpack, and go download Eating Donuts & Other Refined Foods already.
“Ass like that make a vegan say fuck it”
“SBJW Boot #4” by Jonwayne.
You should be listening to this dude. Had the pleasure of meeting him when he was in Toronto this summer, and he is a stand-up, class act rap artist (rare). His stage presence is fucking crazy, too. Big man with a mic and an SP-404 had the whole (wrong)bar moving. Can’t wait to see what’s next from him.
Might just pick up his Cassette EP. That’s right, he put a cassette out. In 2012. That du!
Fellow Mississauga native Rich Kidd is doing a production class on Saturday with Manifesto. Given his newest, amazing volume release, and the calibre of beats this guy seems to always be putting out, you’d be foolish to miss it.
Can’t wait for this album.
