So producer Just Blaze has been working on a house project. I wouldn’t really be all that excited, except I heard this track this morning. Great morning music, and I can’t wait to see what Justin has cooked up for dance floors. He put out one of the best beats of 2012, so this is quite the departure.
“So Many Details” by Toro Y Moi.
Great song, even though the music video kinda looks like a Gap advertisement. Anything in Return is out January 22, 2013.
“What Do The Lonely Do At Christmas?” by The Emotions.
“Fifteen Minutes” by The Strokes.
“Empty Pools” by Shlohmo.
This song always reminded me of the lights you see in public parks when they’re supposedly “closed.” How do you even close a public park, anyway?
“Man Oh Man” by The Impressions.
It’s raining outside right now.
If you’re a fan of Jeezy you might recognize this song.
Lift Off (Feat. Shafiq Husayn / Mic Check)
Robert Glasper Featuring Shafiq Husayn / Mic Check
Black Radio
“Lift Off” by Robert Glasper with Shafiq Husayn.
Great, future soul bumps, Black Radio was nominated for a Grammy, and rightfully so. Speaking of the Grammys, where the fuck is Kendrick?
“Hello world. Peace and love.”
“Here Comes the King” by Snoop Lion, featuring Angela Hunte, produced by Major Lazer.
This just might be a late game contendor for song of the year. A raido-ripped version from Diplo’s BBC Mix show made its way to Youtube, but an album rip is a much better listen, obviously. And this knocks, and is the kind of song that’s gonna keep you warm at winter time. While it might be a little nuts for the purists to see the Doggfather pull off a reggae restart (more like rebirth) like this, I’m gonna be putting this on pretty heavily for the rest of our planet’s (presumed) existence. Peace.
And the 8-bit text video is a nice touch. I feel like a dummy for missing this at TIFF this year.
“Something in the Water (Does Not Compute)” by Prince.
So beat man Elaquent rolled through Toronto last week to promote his new project, Parallel. If you don’t know about eQ, kill yourselfhe’s a Guelph-based producer working in the realm of “cloud-hop”, with loopy, weird time-signatures, and knockin’ drum kicks colouring his music. Like crayon marks outside the lines of a picture book, his music waves in and out the conventional. Hope your imagination has the required capacity for this stuff, it’s left of left field. Just saying.
Listen to Elaquent’s Parallel EP here.
“Aiight” by BJ the Chicago Kid.
The whole album is amazing, but a horrible listen if you’re not with someone you love.
“It’s You I Love” by The Techniques.
Music to get cheer’d up with.
“Higher Ground” by TNGHT.
It just got announced by mymanhenri of 92bpm.com (if it isn’t already, add this to your bookmarks). One of the surprise shows of the year to send off 2012 as one of the best music years of Toronto yet for me, it’s shaping up to be show of the year. Toronto jazz-act BADBADNOTGOOD will be holding court, and Henri will probably be jumping on the decks to get the night started. Yes, you should go. Tickets go on sale Friday morning at the usual suspects (Play De Record, Rotate This, Soundscapes). You can also buy them online when they go on sale. See you there.

“Voyager” by Daft Punk.
In 2007 these guys came to Toronto for their Alive tour. I had a friend buy two tickets, and she invited me along. I didn’t go because my girlfriend at the time got jealous, and we ended up seeing Superbad or something in theatres instead.
I’ve lived with that regret ever since.
“Here Comes the King” by Snoop Lion.
This song’s gonna sound much better without that radio siren bullshit.
