My friend BriskinTheHouse just put a new music video out for his song “ViolettSmoke.” I posted about his tape Searching for Staorii when he dropped it, and I can’t emphasize how well he reps Toronto. Seriously check it. Impressive visuals, and some wonderful camerawork by the man SoTeeOh.

I love when this happens.
Young Miami-based rapper HOF randomly emailed me on a Wednesday evening inviting me to check his first project, Magick out. I got to it a couple days later, and was blown away by the sound. This kid just comes out of nowhere with some familiar themes, but flips its in such a solemn, energetic yet reserved way that really blends well with the soft stringy melody in the background, peppered with a heavy bass rumble that brings it all together.
Keep this guy on your radar. We need more diverse flows like this in a world populated with A$AP Mob prospects, Meek Mill imposters, and everything in between.

I have nothing to say if you don’t “get” Future. Some of you might have a Dad who really, really loves his rock n roll, and has a respectable musical library of the genre. But, but, but, Dad also happens to listen to, love, and have framed tickets of all the shows he’s been to of… Twisted Sister? Yeah, kinda like that. And if you can sympathize with Dad’s perspective, you might get why Future is huge. His 2013 mixtape, F.B.G.: The Movie makes nearly every other artist in this evolving sub-genre of (t)rap, with its machine gun 808 snares, chanting hooks, and loud knocks, look stupid as hell by comparison.

2013 is going to be Two 9’s year. What a great Christmas present. This is Atlanta party rap, kinda thing that makes you wanna start waving your arms while dancing and start throwing beer cans at girls dancing in the basement of a bar at 4 a.m. on a Tuesday. I’ve heard their live shows are pretty much just that. Hoping to find that out for real soon.

“Die” by TREE.
This song is heavy as hell. I remember when I first heard my cousin got diagnosed with leukemia and how it threw me into a half-decade loop of questioning and feeling like you have no idea what the world is, and I think this song captures the closesness and togetherness you feel when you get immediate, life-changing news. A diagnosis never, ever affects just one person, and this song really gets Tree going into his blood, and the limits you go to for family.
By the way, I’ve already blogged on Sunday School, and with good reason; it’s in my top 5 mixtape releases of the year. It’s criminal this guy isn’t getting the rotation he deserves.
