Walked by this half-drunk last night (shout out my brother for the text!). Couldn’t believe it. Kanye West will be on Saturday Night Live tonight, starting at 11:30 p.m. EST.

I know, it’s not much. Maybe more will be announced/released at Coachella? Word on the e-street is that this song will be out Monday. Hope so!
I’m so happy for the success Soulection has seen in the past year. Pushing the L.A. beat scene to new and exciting places, this music collective, co-led by Joe Kay, has quickly become one of my favourite internet radio shows ever. They’re on every Saturday at 1 p.m. EST on the KBeach radio stream, and you can listen to past episodes on their Mixcloud.
Get familiar with these guys, they’re putting out some of the most interesting music in the world right now, and I can’t wait to see what else they have in store for 2013.
“Imagination should be the centre of your life.
My friend BriskinTheHouse just put a new music video out for his song “ViolettSmoke.” I posted about his tape Searching for Staorii when he dropped it, and I can’t emphasize how well he reps Toronto. Seriously check it. Impressive visuals, and some wonderful camerawork by the man SoTeeOh.

“The Socialites” by Dirty Projectors.
So beat man Elaquent rolled through Toronto last week to promote his new project, Parallel. If you don’t know about eQ, kill yourselfhe’s a Guelph-based producer working in the realm of “cloud-hop”, with loopy, weird time-signatures, and knockin’ drum kicks colouring his music. Like crayon marks outside the lines of a picture book, his music waves in and out the conventional. Hope your imagination has the required capacity for this stuff, it’s left of left field. Just saying.
Listen to Elaquent’s Parallel EP here.
“White Dress” by Kanye West, off The Man With the Iron Fists OST.
Can’t wait to see RZA’s directorial debut. Also, I would love to “direct” a music video like this. It’s basically a weekend of chilling around the world with models and taking pictures. Yeah, I think I could do that for a living. DanTheMan said he had a day to throw it together. Whenever you wanna call that’d be great, Mr. West!
Saw Flying Lotus last night at Danforth Music Hall. The visuals alone were worth the price of admission. I’m still having a hard time trying to contextualize what that concert meant to me. I really think Steven Ellison is a special artist. He actually walked right past me in the crowd, and I got to shake his hand. All I could get out was that “I’m a huge fan,” and that I thought Until the Quiet Comes was his most powerful work yet.
I’ve met some of my favourite artists in person a few times, and make it a point to stick around after shows to see if they’ll say hey, but it was one of the only times I’ve ever been truly starstruck. FlyLo is one of the few artists that has had a lasting impact on how I approach music, both from a listening and practicing perspective. He really has solidified his place in my mind as one of the best producers out, and his challenging, progressive, musical thoughts require a bit more than just trying to figure out how to properly dance to it to understand. Based on the weird interjections of tempo change throughout most of his performance, it’s not hard to tell. With that said, I didn’t stop moving throughout the whole thing, doing my best to channel Storyboard P, and had an absolutely wonderful time. I was transfixed throughout the whole performance. Was really hoping to see a Thundercat bass duo, or even a rumoured Drake bring-out, but nonetheless, it was one of the best concerts of the year.
Great visual piece done by my friend Char Loro + her crew on UNITY Charity.
Fellow Mississauga native Rich Kidd is doing a production class on Saturday with Manifesto. Given his newest, amazing volume release, and the calibre of beats this guy seems to always be putting out, you’d be foolish to miss it.
Last Thursday, it was announced that comedian legend Dave Chappelle would be in Toronto for three nights only. I read it on Twitter from someone, and immediately loaded up (stupid fucking) Ticketmaster. Unfortunately, seeing as ticks were about $60 each and that it’s getting dangerously close to that expensive month of Tuition and First/Last month’s rent and a million other expenses, I held off purchasing. I will not be seeing the show.
When I was 13 I watched this skit with my friends on Comedy Network and laughed so hard that I passed out. I literally fainted from laughter, and that’s never happened since.
Comedy and making general hilarious observations has ,and continues to be, my nervous twitch/security blanket. It’s what I do to make this often monotonous existence we’re all forced to pony up with together semi-amusing. Often it isn’t, but it’s been a longtime dream of mine to one day be a comedian. Still hasn’t happened, but fuck it, maybe one day.
Since I won’t be able to go see Mr. Chappelle this week in Toronto (unless I’m blessed with some sort of divine intervention/free tickets) here’s his Inside the Actors Studio interview. After watching it, I’m sure you’ll agree with me that he’s one of the most genius men who ever dared to set foot in Hollywood, CA.
Jim Carrey as Seinfeld is almost as good as Seinfeld in Seinfeld.
